Picture the family photos you love most — the ones you'd grab if the house were on fire. Odds are, almost none of them are the "everybody look at the camera and smile" shots. They're the in-between moments: a shared laugh, a sleepy head on a shoulder, a kid mid-twirl. There's a reason for that.

The posed shot captures what your family looked like. The candid one captures what it felt like to be there. And feeling is what you'll want back in twenty years.

The magic lives between the poses

The instant right after "say cheese" — when everyone relaxes, someone cracks a joke, a toddler bolts — that's the gold. Those unguarded seconds hold the real dynamic of your family: who leans on whom, who makes everyone laugh, the way you actually are together. My job is to be ready for exactly those moments instead of interrupting them.

Kids can't be posed anyway — so don't fight it

Ask a four-year-old to "sit still and smile naturally" and you'll get the opposite. But let that same child run, explore, climb into a parent's arms, and you get pure joy. The less we direct, the more honest — and the more beautiful — the photos become. The pressure disappears, and so does the frozen, fake smile.

For military families, the real moments matter even more

When your family is far from home and chapters change with every set of orders, you don't just want proof you were there — you want proof of who you were. The candid frames carry that: this season, this connection, these exact ages, captured as they really were. Those are the images that anchor a memory long after a duty station becomes a story.

How I work

I keep things light and let life happen. A little gentle guidance to set the scene, then I step back and watch for the real moments. Because I don't use a fixed studio, we do this where your family is most natural — at home, on or off base, or outdoors around Kaiserslautern and Ramstein. Comfortable surroundings, genuine moments, no stiff posing.
